I'd like to add the fact that "Kal-El" is ancient Kryptonian for "Star Child," but was that actually mentioned in any of the canonical sources? I know it was in one of the Maggin novels, but my mind is drawing a blank about any other references. Macduff 21:55, 25 December 2006 (EST)

In the comics

The novels are canon, but as far as the comics, it was in Superman No. 257 October 1972: "The Greatest Green Lantern of All" by Elliot S! Maggin. according to this site [1] So I guess it was his idea.
