Professor William Enders

A dedicated astronomer and author of a book called The Planet Krypton, who, years ago, shortly before the planet Krypton exploded into fragments, observed Krypton via telescope, communicated with Jor-El via radio, and, by following Jor-El's detailed instructions for the building of a "matter-radio"—"a transmitter that can send all forms of living matter--even living people--across space by radio"—even made a journey to Krypton, where he befriended Jor-El and his family and discussed with the brilliant Kryptonian scientist the impending doom of his planet.

In July-August 1952, Buttons Harris and a henchman kidnap Professor Enders and steal the matter-radio so that they can use the fabulous transmitter for crime—principally by allowing client gangs to commit crimes in Metropolis and then make instantaneous matter-radio getaways to a distant city—but Superman apprehends Harris and his cohorts and rescues Professor Enders from their clutches (S No. 77/1: "The Man Who Went to Krypton!").
