The Jaguar Cult
The evil sect of Mayans who seek the Magic Medallion of the Mayans and world domination.
According to Jimmy Olsen's father, Mark Olsen, the Jaguar Cult "is a secret society of modern mayans--terrorists who swore before the Jaguar God to restore the empire of their forefathers" (SPJO No. 158, Jun 1973: "The Jaws of the Jaguar").
The cult possesses both modern scientific knowledge and knowledge of native medicines and elixirs. When in action, members sometimes wear jaguar skin costumes with clawed gloves and sandals.
In June 1973, Mark Olsen is assaulted by members of the Jaguar Cult but is saved from permanent harm by his son Jimmy. The Olsens determine that the cultists are after the Magic Medallion of the Mayans, a talisman that grants its owner "the powers of the Mayan Gods." The cult leader, the scientist Xingu, desires the medallion in order to use its power to rebuild the Mayan civilization and destroy the U.S. When the cult renders Superman powerless using a crystal dust "radiated by the light from a red sun," Jimmy must use the powers of the amulet to become Ultra Olsen and rescue his father who has been kidnapped by the cult. During the course of the ensuing battle, Xingu has a change of heart but is not able to explain himself before Ultra Olsen uses his lightning vision to destroy the talisman (SPJO No. 158, Jun 1973: "The Jaws of the Jaguar").
