The Original Nightwing and Flamebird
Ak-Var as Flamebird

Flamebird

An alternate identity employed by Jimmy Olsen on those occasions when he and Superman, employing the name Nightwing, participate in adventures together inside the bottle city of Kandor.

The bright red and yellow color of Jimmy's Flamebird costume are reminiscent of the plumage of the flamebird, a Kandorian bird. Jimmy Olsen and Superman first adopt their Nightwing and Flamebird identities during an adventure in Kandor in January 1963 (S No. 158: "Superman in Kandor" pts. I-III; "Invasion of the Mystery Super-Men!"; "The Dynamic Duo of Kandor!"; "The City of Super-People!"). They employ them again during a second adventure, in August 1964 (WF No. 143: "The Feud Between Batman and Superman!" pts. I-II--no title; "The Manhunters from Earth!"). (TGSB)

Some time later, the Kandorian citizen Ak-Var becomes Flamebird to Van-Zee's Nightwing (SF No. 183/5, May/Jun 1977: "Death Is a Computer"; and others).
