Dr. Hugo Renaldo

An underworld medical practitioner who, posing as an eminent psychiatrist, volunteers his professional services to mentally disturbed artist Paul McKenzie, a painter “famous for his magnificent portrayals of heroes in action” until a tragic “mental collapse” caused his once, realistic art style to become disoriented and irrational, as the first step in an elaborate scheme to keep Superman so busily occupied helping McKenzie with his mental problems as to leave him powerless to prevent Renaldo’s gangland cohorts from looting Metropolis. Renaldo and his underworld allies are apprehended by Superman in July 1952 (Act No. 170: “The Mad Artist of Metropolis!”).
